  • Kyberfest performance '06 download / stream 39 meg - this was a performance done with Warren Sirota (guitar) and Brian Good (sax and EWI) as part of the 2006 International Live Looping Festival. Warren was playing in Santa Cruz, CA, at the festival space, while Brian dialed in from Ohio and myself from Oaxaca, Mexico, using Ninjam. This starts out very prettily, then heads to outer space and pretty much stays there. Warren and I are both playing nylon-strings, though he also used his as a MIDI controller. My guitar sound is a bit thinner and brighter, and seemingly a bit stronger in the left channel.

  • 10/1/06 download / stream 8.4 meg - this is an improvisation I did while testing my Ninjam settings in preparation for a group performance. All looping is done with a self-made looping cassette. There are a few times where the loops pause briefly, which happens as I flip the tape over for reverse effects.
Background:

I've been using loops for many years, mostly in the context of vocal tunes, or as a completely self-contained little entity (as in the Repetitive Minatures project). One thing which is very common among folks who do looping is improvisational performance, where the music-maker plays with the looping equipment as if it were a group of musicians, interacting, providing accompaniment, and occasionally throwing unexpected things into the mix. I really enjoy this process, and have been messing around with delays and loopers almost since I started playing guitar. Here I'll be sharing examples of this kind of thing, both as a solo performance and used as a tool in playing with other musicians.
