The Name: ...of Imagination. I wanted it to refer to our improv tendencies. Plus, I was a bit of a hippie at that point.

Lifespan: 1990

Personnel:

  • Douglas Witmer - vocals, drums
  • Bruce Leininger - bass
  • DS - guitar, vocals
Guitar Rig: Yamaha neck-through-body, Rat distortion, Dunlop wah, Digitech PDS 1002 delay, Vox Pacemaker

High Point: tie - a performance of Hendrix' "Third Stone from the Sun" and the Police's "Tea in the Sahara" at an on-campus battle of the bands. Both tunes just came together magically.

Low Point: at the same show, we played Men at Work's "Who Can it Be Now?" with sax. We'd neglected to tune up beforehand, and we had to stop the song after 20 seconds of ear-rending microtonality. After the painful process of tuning onstage and restarting the song, though, it sounded pretty great.

Story: While home for the summer between my first and second years of college, I started to picture my ideal college band. A band playing original material didn't seem to be the thing; I was only going to be there for one semester before heading to Guadeloupe, and I'd had such fun playing cover material with the Deferens that I wanted to do more of the same, but as my own project. I pictured a trio, with me out in front on guitar, playing musically interesting songs that held some familiarity for people.

I proposed the idea to Douglas, my old Landscape Paperweight bandmate, and he agreed to do drums and most of the singing. We knew Bruce, a mellow guy and great bassist, from high school, and he also agreed readily. I picked the songs and traded off vocal duties with Doug. We only played out three times, but we gelled wonderfully and I loved the experience of leading a trio, which laid the groundwork for Maxwell Horse almost ten years later.
